Apple to Launch a Low-Cost MacBook in 2026: Cheaper Than the $999 MacBook Air

Apple is preparing to introduce a brand-new budget MacBook in 2026, designed to compete directly with low-priced Chromebooks and entry-level Windows laptops. This upcoming model is expected to be more affordable than the $999 MacBook Air, making it a strong option for students, casual users, and budget-conscious buyers.

Compact 13-Inch Design

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the low-cost MacBook will feature a 13-inch display, slightly smaller than the 13.6-inch MacBook Air. While Apple is known for thin, premium designs, this device may not focus heavily on ultra-thin aesthetics to keep costs down.

However, since the fanless MacBook Air with an M-series chip runs cool in a slim 0.44-inch chassis, the new model is unlikely to be significantly thicker.

Standard LCD Display, Colorful iMac-Style Design

To reduce manufacturing costs, Apple will use a standard LCD panel—no mini-LED or ProMotion. The company may offer this MacBook in bright, playful colors similar to the iMac lineup. Kuo suggests possible shades such as silver, blue, pink, and yellow.

Powered by the A18 Pro Chip

Instead of an M-series chip, Apple plans to use the A18 Pro, the same processor found in the iPhone 16 Pro models. Built on Apple’s second-generation 3nm process, the chip includes:

  • 8GB RAM
  • Apple Intelligence support
  • Performance similar to—or faster than—the original M1 chip

Benchmark tests show the A18 Pro delivers single-core performance on par with the M3 Ultra and multi-core scores similar to the M1. GPU performance (Metal score) also aligns closely with the M1.

Performance and Capabilities

The A18 Pro allows the new MacBook to handle everyday tasks with ease, including:

  • Web browsing
  • Document editing
  • Media consumption
  • Photo editing
  • Basic video editing

The chip also supports Apple Intelligence, giving users access to AI-driven tools and smart features. It will run macOS, offering a true computer experience—not a tablet OS like iPadOS.

Port Selection and Battery Life

To keep costs lower, Apple may include only one USB-C port, though a dual-port setup like the MacBook Air remains possible. Battery life could match or exceed MacBook Air levels, thanks to the efficient A18 Pro chip and large internal battery space.

The MacBook Air currently delivers up to 18 hours of video playback and 15 hours of web browsing, and the budget MacBook may offer similar performance.

Expected Price

Apple is reportedly targeting a price below $1,000. Since the iPad Air (13-inch) starts at $799 and the iPad mini (A17 Pro) starts at $499, analysts expect the new MacBook to fall in the $499–$799 range.

Walmart recently sold the older M1 MacBook Air for $599, offering another clue to Apple’s pricing strategy.

Release Timeline

Apple is expected to launch the low-cost MacBook in the first half of 2026. Updated MacBook Air models are also planned for early 2026, meaning both product lines may arrive around the same time.

For users waiting for a true budget-friendly Apple laptop, 2026 could be a major year.
